DBA RF Techniques (RFT) is a leading designer and manufacturer specializing in high reliability brazed High Power Resistors, High Power Attenuators and High Power Terminations in Aluminum Nitride (AlN), Alumina & Beryllium Oxide (BeO) substrates for the Microwaves & RF applications. RFT products are 100% manufactured in USA.

RFT utilizes a high temperature brazing process that yields the lowest possible thermal resistance for higher temperature device operation. This proprietary processing also ensures higher reliability and longer performance life, while the high temperature fluxless brazing process eliminates the concerns of lead separation during soldering operations and provides a joint without corrosive flux residue. This proven high temperature brazing process improves component reliability and power derating up to 250 deg C. These high reliability resistor products will withstand substantial forces applied to the lead due to different rates of contraction and expansion of the lead during temperature variations.

RFT also offers a wide range of surface mount packages in Aluminum Nitride (AlN), Alumina & Beryllium Oxide(BeO) substrates for the RF or DC applications. Since RF Techniques screen print the metallization in house, we have the capability to modify the part per customers drawing with minimal cost. RF Techniques uses scan trim method to trim the resistors up to 1% tolerance. Scan trimmed parts perform better than the lower cost plunge cut used by most suppliers. Since the assembly is done in house, we have more control on the process.

Differences between Brazed and Soldered Products

  • High Reliability: Brazed devices were introduced more than 30 years ago and RF Techniques still manufactures the best brazed resistors, attenuators and terminations on the market. During life test comparison, brazed devices temperature and resistance value stayed more stable than the soldered devices. Brazed devices are utilized in demanding environments. They are used in many military and commercial programs requiring the most stringent performance standards.

Non-Corrosive Brazed Joints: Brazing is done over 800C in an inert atmosphere without using any flux. This process eliminates the corrosion found with typical soldered joints.

  • Higher Power Dissipation: RFT brazed devices dissipate more watts per square inch than any other products on the market. Brazed devices can handle more RF power than a soldered device. RFT can supply devices with up to 500 watts power handling capability for frequency ranges from DC to 6 GHz.

Higher Temperature Operation: Brazed devices offer a significant advantage over the soldered devices in power handling capability due to superior power derating capability. Brazed devices are power derated to flange temperature up to 250 degree C. This high temperature capability provides the user with improved system reliability and a wider margin of performance under abnormal operating conditions. RFT devices are also capable of withstanding much higher temperature for short period of time without damage. (The part itself will survive at higher temperature but the resistor stability is not guaranteed at higher temperature as well as the epoxy used to attach the alumina protective cover will not withstand higher operating temperature than 250 degree C. ) High temperature capability provides the user with improved system reliability and a wider margin of performance under abnormal operating conditions. Typical problem of joint separation found in soldered part is eliminated with brazed construction.

  • Lower Thermal Resistance: RFT uses a high temperature brazing process that yields the lowest possible thermal resistance and allows for higher temperature operation. Higher temperature processing also ensures greater reliability and overall performance during thermal cycling.

Better Lead Strength: Silver plated Nickel tabs of the brazed parts gets annealed as they go through the brazing process. Annealed leads are softer and easy for the customer to bend and form without damaging them. Typical lead pull strength is up to 5 lbs. Brazed device will withstand substantial forces applied to the lead due to different rates of contraction and expansion of the lead during temperature variations. The customer need not have to worry about leads coming off during soldering operations.

  • Thin Film Resistor: Thin film resistor has better stability and least moisture absorption.

    RFT offers chip resistors for power dissippation as well as microwave and RF applications. These can ve wire bonded or can supply with tab attached in several standard sizes and power levels. These are available in BeO, Alumina and Aluminum Nitride.
